Adam Ulrey's Montreal Expos Diary

September 22, 2002 - Game 156

The Expos, behind two rookie pitchers, got back on the winning track by beating the Mets 5-1 behind the stellar pitching of Sun-Woo Kim and Zach Day. Kim was two outs shy of his first big league win until he came up with severe leg cramps that forced him to leave after 4 1/3 innings of shut out ball. Day though came on to pitch the remaining 4 2/3 innings, giving up just two hits and one run to gain his 4th win of the year. Kim lowered his ERA to 1.50 and the Expos believe he'll be part of next year's rotation. Day also made a case to be included possible in the rotation. The Expos are leaning towards making Tony Armas Jr. a closer, freeing up a spot in the rotation for one of their young hurlers.

The Expos had 10 hits, lead by Vladimir Guerrero's 38th homer of the year, a two-run shot off of Mets starter Al Leiter. He also stole his 40th base of the year and needs just two homers to become the fourth player to ever get 40 homers and 40 steals. The Expos are now two games over .500 at 79-77 and need to just win 2 of the remaining six to assure themselves of a .500 season.
