Adam Ulrey's Montreal Expos Diary

September 17, 2002 - Game 151

After 4 hours and 39 minutes, with only 100 or so people still in the stands, the Expos scored four runs in the top of the 14th to beat the Florida Marlins 8-5. Rookie Jamey Carroll hit a tie-breaking single and Jose Vidro followed with a three-run homer to give the Expos their fifth win in a row and pulled them to within one game of .500 at 75-76.

It also gave the Expos sole possession of second place in the East. The Expos pounded out 16 hits, with Brian Schneider getting four and Vladimir Guerrero collecting three to raise his average to .335. Vidro's homer was his 19th and his three RBIs gave him 89 for the year. Carroll, who has been a shot in the arm for the Expos at third base, is now hitting .381 since his call up, after going 2-for-7 with his go-ahead RBI.

It's also always a little more special to beat the Marlins who are owned by former Expos owner Jeffrey Lorie. Sun-Woo Kim, who the Expos received in the Cliff Floyd deal, pitched 5 2/3 solid innings giving up just two runs. Scott Stewart came on to pitch the last 1 1/3 to gain his 4th win of the year. Orlando Cabrera stole his 17th straight base without being caught, just three away from Tim Raines' team record.
