Adam Ulrey's Montreal Expos Diary

September 11, 2002 - Game 146

On the day that no one will ever forget, with this being the one-year anniversary of the tragic events from last year, Sammy Sosa hit his 495th homer of his career. The Cubs beat the Expos 6-3 thanks in part to Sosa's 3-for-4 day, but recently called up Kevin Orie had a two-run pinch hit double to put the game away for the Cubs. Alan Benes, who has battled injuries for most of his career, had a terrific outing. He is hoping to win a spot in the Cubs rotation for next year. He went seven strong innings giving up seven hits and three earned runs, while striking out five and walking no one to pick up his second win of the year.

The two best hitters all year long for the Expos, Jose Vidro and Vladimir Guerrero, supplied all the hitting. They drove in all three runs and got three hits between them. Masato Yoshii, who was pitching very well for most of August, has been getting hammered in the month of September lasting only five innings. He gave up six hits and four runs to watch his record drop to 4-9 and his ERA jump up to 4.11.
