Reames leads the Expos over the Astros 3-1
Britt Reames and two Montreal relievers combined on a four-hitter, and Brad Wilkerson provided
the entire offensive needed with his RBI triple and he scored the go-ahead run in the sixth
to lead the Expos over Houston 3-1.
Reams (1-2), just called back up from Ottawa their Triple-A farm club in July 27th, struck out
seven and walked two as he allowed two hits over seven innings. This was his first start since
June 2. Scott Stewart came on after Matt Herges allowed Craig Biggio's leadoff single in the
ninth and got the last three outs for his 14th save in 16 opportunities. Reames was the story
though, giving the Expos a real shot in the arm with his wonderfully pitched game. He threw only
91 pitches through his seven innings, with 55 of them for strikes.
Wilkerson, along with Jose Vidro and Troy O'Leary, each had two hits and an RBI each in
leading the Expos attack. The Astros pitcher, Peter Munro pitched himself a terrific game
himself, but unfortunately he wasn't good enough to beat Reames today. He went seven innings
giving up just six hits and two runs to lower his ERA down to 2.57. The only Astros run came
in the second on a Brad Ausmus groundout that scored Daryle Ward. The Expos had to place Wil
Cordero on the 15-day DL with a strained muscle in his left calf. Cordero sustained the
injury in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to Arizona. Infieldeer Henry Mateo was recalled from
Triple-A Ottawa for the third time this season.
The Expos have a Gary Carter bobblehead promotion scheduled for Sunday's series finale.
