OH, TO BE THE YANKEE GMBy Robert PalazzoThe Yanks will try to re-tool, During this current off-season. But if they don't field a winning team, Cashman'll at least have a good reason. His job would usually be easy, Given the Yankees' past. Dip into the free agent pool, Spend money; solve problems fast! But this year he needs to cut. This makes it very hard To solve your talent needs, By playing the free agent card. The Yanks' payroll is quite high. It's the highest at $135 mil. And their rev sharing/luxury tax, Amounts to quite a bill. Deals have been discussed, To unload Hitchcock and White. It's unclear why they signed them. When looking at it with hindsight. As for pitcher Stanton, They cut him loose last week. The Yanks and pitcher Stanton, They didn't even speak. Stanton made it very clear, He disliked the cut in pay. Now Hammond will get the ball. Doubt Stanton wanted it to end that way. Cashman is pursuing Matsui. Can he make the deal? If ‘Godzilla' gets his money, How will the other Yankees feel? And what about Clemens? A new free agent is he. When all is said and done, Will he still pitch for them in 2003? So Brian must be careful, That his decisions not be rash. Isn't it quite ironic that, His last name begins with ‘Cash'!. And so he has his orders, Given him by Boss George. Can he bring home a winner With the deals he'll try to forge? The Yankee clubhouse misses, The passion of Tino and O'Neill. Can it be replaced By someone named Todd Zeille? Cashman has a dilemma. Which players go; which stays? This off-season can haunt him In so many different ways. Can Brian make George happy? Will he achieve his goal Of pulling together a winner While cutting overall payroll? While Brian does his thing, We Yankee fans will have to wait. No sense in trying to guess. Don't try to speculate. And until the season starts, We'll expect him to put up a good fight. But should we lose any sleep, Should we be concerned - not quite! Leave feedback on our message board. |
