AAGPBL Interview - Christine JewittChristine Jewitt was one of the Canadians who played for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. She took the time to answer a few of our questions. 1) How did you get interested in playing baseball and where did you play before you turned pro? Regina, Canada. 2) Describe your signing. A former coach approached me and asked if I'd like to try out. So I went to Spring Training and was picked by the Kenosha coach to play for their team in 1948. 3) What position(s) did you play? Which teams did you play for? I played right field for the Kenosha Comets and Peoria Redwings. 4) Do you think the fans and press accepted you more as the years wore on? (Describe how it was when you started. Did increased exposure change some minds?) We had good fan support and I believe they enjoyed the games. As to whether it was because it was women playing or not I wouldn't like to guess. 5) Who were your favorite big league ballplayers during the era you played in? I did not really follow the big leagues at that time and and very few of the names were familiar to me, as we had no Canadian teams at the time. 6) Do you follow big league ball now? If so, how do you think it compares with your day? Yes, I follow some of the Blue Jays, but really don't make comparisons. 7) Should women have their own pro league, should they play in the majors, or should we have both (a women's league and the chance for the best women players to play in the majors?) Yes there should be a womens' baseball league as I'm sure it could get a following of fans. But strengthwise I think very few of the women would be able to play in the major leagues.
