CLEVELAND INDIANS-- Barry Swanton

Age, injuries and a questionable pitching staff could prevent the Tribe from getting back to the playoffs. Except for catcher Einar Diaz all the position players are in the 30 years and over age group.

If Juan Gonzalez comes to play, the Tribe hopes he will be an adequate replacement for Manny Ramirez. Gonzales has a lifetime batting average of .294, 362 home runs and is a two-time MVP. Add Ellis Burks to the mix and the Tribe should continue to have no problems scoring runs. Their .288 team batting average tied them for top spot in the league.

Another strong point is defense. The Tribe committed only 72 errors, which was the least in the league.

Finding five healthy starters could be a problem. Bartolo Colon is the ace and the steady Dave Burba will take the two spot in the rotation. Chuck Finley, Charley Nagy and Jaret Wright are all coming back from injuries. Steve Karsay and Steve Woodard will try to win starting spots.

All Star Bob Wickman and Paul Shuey head up a strong bullpen. The Tribe signed lefty Scott Radinsky to a minor league contract, with an invite to the main camp. He missed last season due to an injury and if healthy, could help the bullpen. He is 42-25, 3.34 ERA lifetime.

The Indians hope to get off to a good start and avoid the injury bug, but it will be the pitching staff that will determine their success.
